Court Builders Series – Game On, Weston!

Celebrating Our Courts

On Saturday, October 10, we celebrated the Court Builder Series at Weston Lions Park. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., neighbours of all ages came out for a ribbon-cutting, drop-in basketball led by MLSE Foundation and a first look at the newly improved courts.

The Court Builder Series is a free community program that brings youth, families and neighbours together through basketball. This celebration marked a milestone for the series and for the courts that have become a gathering place in Weston Village.

Part of the Weston Loop

Players got to try out brand-new nets and a series of court improvements made through the Court Builder Series. These upgrades are about more than paint and hardware. They're about giving Weston a safe, welcoming place to play, train and connect, close to home.

MLSE Foundation led the games and activities throughout the day, keeping players of all skill levels engaged from the first tip-off to the final buzzer.

New Nets, Better Courts

Players got to try out new backboards and nets, freshly relined surfaces and a reconfigured court layout, all delivered by the Weston Loop through the Court Builder Series. These upgrades are about more than paint and hardware. They're about giving Weston a safe, welcoming place to play, train and connect, close to home.

MLSE Foundation led the games and activities throughout the day, keeping players of all skill levels engaged from the first tip-off to the final buzzer.

Weston Showed Up

The response was incredible. Dozens of young people arrived on the courts within hours of our announcement, and the energy carried through the whole day.

Noah Virgo, Youth Coordinator at Weston Park Baptist Church, described what a space like this can be for young people in the area: "a place where they can just leave their troubles, their burdens away, and be able to not only just connect with other people their age, find friends, find community, because that's what makes us strong at the end of the day."

Thank You

This day took a whole community. Thank you to MLSE Foundation for leading the games, to Strength to Lead and Weston Park Baptist Church for their work with local youth, and to Mohamed Firin, MPP for York South–Weston, for joining us on the court.

Thank you as well to the Weston Landowners Group, who pooled $20 million to make this revitalization possible. And to everyone who came out, brought a friend and helped make the day such a success: thank you.

Just the Beginning

The courts at Weston Lions Park are a first step, not the finish line. As one speaker said on the day, the Weston Loop Court Builder Series "is a small scratch on the surface of what we're about to do."
